The records available here are a product of my efforts to trace the
activities in America of my immigrant German ancestors. An important
strategy in researching family history is to find and transcribe every
record containing the family name in the area where they settled. These
records contain clues useful for tracking down the ancestors of
interest.
My immigrant ancestors came to Cleveland, Ohio, and subsequently
lived in the surrounding area. By collecting the data on the Heger
families in Cleveland, I found crucial evidence that led me to
re-discover
the origins in Germany of my own ancestors.
The data presented here may help others in their search for ancestors.
These records are transcribed or extracted from microfilm of 19th and
early 20th century records
made in Cleveland and surrounding areas. The
records selected for transcription began with the earliest available
and continue into the 1900s. This period covers the time of the most
intense German immigration and settlement in Cleveland. Most of the
records come from public government offices. See the bottom of this
page for other useful sites that offer online data relevant to the
Heger / Hager families in Cleveland and vicinity.
The records in the table linked from this page are transcriptions
from the original records. They contain the standard entries of the
original records, but may not contain other notations or variations.
There is not one source for the vital records of 19th century Cleveland, and the inclusiveness of the records falls far short of today's standards. Thus, the several sources are presented separately below. County records are often indexed. In the links below, some of the index entries are presented separately from the records themselves below. Some index entries do not have corresponding records available, and whether they exist is unclear, but if they do, they would be in Cleveland.
An essential resource is the U.S. Federal Census, available online from a variety of sources and in some libraries. You will find additional data (which may not be duplicated here due to possible restrictions) on the Hager families on the following Web sites:
